It is the time of year to get out and enjoy the warm weather! This long Memorial Day weekend gives us time to honor those we have lost in service to our country and also provides an opportunity to celebrate the beginning of the summer season with our friends and family.
Kiawah Island and the surrounding Charleston area offers a unique combination of American history and summer fun with beautiful beaches, gorgeous scenery and events for the entire family to enjoy during this three-day weekend.
FUN FACT: Did you know that one of the earliest observances of Memorial Day took place in Charleston, South Carolina? It was in Hampton Park.
As always, The Kiawah Island Golf Resort has an assortment of activities available, from paddle boarding and kayaking to wonderful dining experiences and even yoga on the beach! Don’t miss the weekend concert series that Freshfields Village is hosting on the green with Swingin Richards on Friday, May 23rd and then Tullamore Road on Saturday, May 24th. Based on local area weather forecasts, there is a large chance we will be seeing rain begin on Saturday that may last throughout the rest of the weekend.

With rain being a likely possibility, we have put together a list of indoor activities and events that will sure to please everyone in your party:
Classroom Programs at the Nature Center. Make a reservation for Reptile Round-Up on Friday or stop by with your young explorers for Scales and Scutes on Saturday!
During Reptile Round-Up you will experience hands-on learning with the Nature Center’s alligators, snakes and turtles. Call for times. $7 per person. 1 hour long. Ages 7+ and children under 14 must be accompanied by an adult.
Scales and Scutes is a shorter class that provides an opportunity for the younger crowd to touch an alligator and pet a snake. Call for times. $5 per person. 30 minutes long. Ages 3 to 6.
Turtles’ Nest Art Studio. The art studio in West Beach at The Straw Market is open this Saturday, May 28 from 11am to 3pm! Paint pottery, experience glass fusing and design your own glass project, or choose from non-kiln projects like wood and canvas painting or even gel candle making. Advance reservations are required for all classes, call (843) 768-6001 for more information.
Don’t forget all of the great shops on the island, in Freshfields Village or downtown Charleston! There are also the many dining experiences on island and right in the area to choose from.
