Although it’s almost always blue skies on Kiawah Island maybe you’ve found yourself visiting with an afternoon rain shower or perhaps a rainy day? Don’t worry! There are still plenty of great activities on and near Kiawah Island. Here are 9 rainy day activities and ideas to keep you having fun in the rain:
ON KIAWAH
Visit the Nature Center at Night Heron Park: There are many interesting displays, including rescued young alligators and other animals. You can also sign up for tours and activities when the weather improves while you’re there.
Eat out: There are many wonderful dining options on island, from The Market at Town Center to the Forbes 4 Star and AAA 4 Diamond rated Ocean Room at The Sanctuary Hotel. Let this be your chance to choose one of the spectacular restaurants on the island you haven’t tried yet!
Go shopping: Take a stroll through the lobbies of The Sanctuary Hotel and visit The Shops. They are fully indoors and include an art gallery, children’s store, gourmet shop, golf store, logo shop and a few clothing boutiques.
Stay in: Use the rainy day as quality time to unwind at your home, villa or cottage! Play some games with family and friends or relax and read a book. Take a nap or grab a drink and cook dinner together.
Stroll on the beach after the storm: Some of the best shells can be found during and immediately after a good rain. After making sure it’s safe to go outdoors, take a walk on the beach and see what treasures have been washed up on the shore!
NEAR KIAWAH
Bohicket Marina: Have lunch or dinner at Red’s Ice House with a view of the marina and enjoy some ice cream afterwards at The Ice Cream Boat. While you’re there you can also check out the stores and boutiques the marina has to offer.

A BIT FARTHER AWAY
Head to the South Carolina Aquarium: Located in Downtown Charleston, the South Carolina Aquarium has numerous exhibits and daily dive shows.
Visit a museum or historic home: Explore and experience the history of downtown Charleston, SC.
- Gibbes Museum of Art; Recognized for its distinct collections of art, the museum host’s seven exhibitions each year, including one permanent collection of fine art, primarily American with ties to Charleston and the South.
- The Charleston Museum; The Charleston Museum is recognized as America’s First Museum founded in 1773. The museum’s exhibits include natural and local history featuring a variety of artifacts, Southern furniture and textiles from the Civil War.
- Children’s Museum of the Lowcountry; Children can explore the art, sciences, and humanities with interactive exhibits, including a pirate ship, two-story Medieval Castle and an art room!
- Nathaniel Russell House; The Nathaniel Russell House is recognized as a National Historical Landmark and one of America’s most important neoclassical dwellings. From its free-flying staircase to the wrought iron balconies, the Nathaniel Russell House is a true example of Federal architecture.
- Aiken-Rhett House; Among one of Charleston’s historic house museums, the Aiken-Rhett House is recognized as the most intact townhouse complex that has remained virtually unaltered since 1858.
See a movie: While there are no commercial movie theaters on island, there are many to choose from in the Charleston area, including the Terrace on Johns Island, Carmike 8 on James Island and the Citadel Mall IMAX in West Ashley.
